Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners assist with the mental health needs of communities, persons, families, and groups across the lifespan; bridging gaps in health care to better meet the needs of the population. Nurse practitioners are held to the same legal and ethical standards of care as physicians, and are committed to providing personalized, quality health care. Nurse practitioners must have at least a Master of Science in Nursing degree before practice and must be board certified.
Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners may also:
- Offer care to address sudden changes in a client’s mental status or chronic psychiatric conditions
- Serve as consultants for other providers or organizations
- Perform various assessments and diagnoses through client interviews and mental health testing
- Develop holistic treatment plans in conjunction with other providers or professionals
- Prescribe medications as appropriate
- Order and interpret diagnostic or laboratory tests
- Collaborate with other healthcare providers and make appropriate referrals
- Maintain detailed records
